This new dance pop track Stand Up was a process! It was written as reminder that no matter how beaten down you feel (it happens a lot) it’s hard but so important to keep getting up and trying again. Even against the most impossible odds.
On a technical note, I have been learning more and more about mixing and mastering and still know it’s only the tip of the iceberg. In another post, I will share some things I have been learning and other great sources of information I’ve come across.
I hope you enjoy and please leave a comment below!
Lyrics for “Stand Up,” an original, dance pop track:
Stand up where you are
Keep reaching for the stars
You know it feels so right
You’re fighting for your life
Here you are
Feeling down
Feeling like you’re about to drown
Remembering
Where you were
What happened to the future?
Held in place
It’s no good
Without a past misunderstood
Questioning
Your place here
It’s so hard to live in fear
We all want
To play again
To dance on beaches in the sun
It’s all right
To be afraid
But not ok to give up again
Ok now
So stand up where you are
We have to start somewhere
Not going down alone
You’re breaking out of here
You feel trapped
And starting now
Remembering the cave and how
Time to say
No more pain
Breaking out of molded shame
And here you are
Who are you?
This is what you’re meant to do
You have strength
To break away
And never fall back here again
This is what
You have to do
Don’t stop now
Cause lights in you
It’s OK to be afraid
Moving forward into change
OK now
So stand up where you are
Never say too far
You’re standing on your feet
And listening to the beat
So Stand up where you are
It’ll never be too far
You’re standing up right now
Keep the vision in your heart
You’re frozen
Frozen in this place
You’re frozen
Froze in outer space
Stand up where you are
Never give up the stars
When you’ve fallen down
Get up off the ground
Rise up where you are
You’ve brought yourself this far
You’re moving with the beat
And dancing in the heat
Stand up where you are
Keep reaching for the stars
You know it feels so right
You’re fighting for your life

Listen to the original single, Pretty Ugly World—an original indie dance pop song I hope you’ll enjoy.
The song was inspired by passages from Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations. There is a section that begins with, “When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself: the people I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous and surly. They are like this because they can’t tell good from evil. But I have seen the beauty of good, and the ugliness of evil, and have recognized that the wrongdoer has a nature related to my own – not of the same blood and birth, but the same mind, and possessing a share of the divine…” It’s worth a read and this post, How To Begin Each Day For Optimal Sanity on Medium has a few choice highlights.
It’s a pretty ugly world
Talking with a friend about the world we’re in today
Look outside, we cheat and lie, its wrong in every way
She calmly said to me that’s just the way it is
People can be good and bad but don’t start giving in
She said:
It’s a pretty ugly world
Yes, it’s pretty ugly world
Then someone else said that you’re seeing your own self
You have choices to make change or stay oblivious
Reminding me that anger’s poison I can take
Its no good and understood there’s choices that we make
He said:
It’s a pretty ugly world
There are selfish boys and girls
Yes it’s a pretty ugly world
But there are loving boys and girls
Since school yard differences we somehow made it work
There’s no place for hatred now so please don’t make it worse
I said
It’s a pretty ugly world
There are selfish boys and girls
Yes it’s a pretty ugly world
But can it mean much more for us?
It’s a pretty ugly world
There are selfish boys and girls
But there are turtles in the sea
And there’s a place for you and me

Original pop song Why Can’t We asks a question—can we change our course of tragic violence or will we continue to look the other way?
Writing this during the holiday season of celebrations, I thought of all those who couldn’t be with their friends and family anymore. It’s unacceptable that gun violence is a common occurrence and I hope we all can effect change.
Lyrics:
Why Can’t We
Wakes up to new elation
Runs fingers through her hair
Then quickly scrolls through texts and
Snaps an IG in the mirror
Now walking to the classroom
She hears them droning on
They turn around to smile but…
She feels like something’s wrong
Then sudden shouts explosions
Thick gunfire punches through
When the fury dies and smoke clears
There’s countless lying still
On a bright and sunlit morning
She draws her final breath
Lets go of a note in silence
And this is all it said:
Why can’t we
Do anything
Why can’t we
Hear their screams
Only a few days later
Their memories fade away
Forgotten ‘til the next time
Like the crumpled note that read:
Why can’t we
End a fucking thing
Why can’t we
Listen to the screams
Why can’t we
(Except count the dead)
End a fucking thing
(Look the other way instead)
Why can’t we
(Except count the dead)
Whispers to a scream
(Look the other way instead)
Oh we can count the dead
Look the other way instead
Oh we can count the dead
And look the other way instead

Dreams, so easy to lose sight of, to let fall away. A recent night outside, I remembered to look up and lose myself in the stars. The sky glowed with uncountable numbers of them. With something this big, immense and unknowable, who am I to stop dreaming? I wanted to write something that captured that spirit. To always keep your dreams, because they really will set you free.
Patterns
Calling all the stars
Doesn’t matter where we are
The universe can seem
Cold and unfeeling
And as the patterns rise
There’s whispers from the skies
You’re looking too far down
Don’t ever close your eyes
A fascinating scene
Doesn’t matter where you’ve been
A broken vein of light
Cuts through the soundless night
Patterns never seen
There’s always time to sleep
This is your entrance
Remembering to dream
Standing where you are
When everything it seems so far
A pulsing rhythm climbs
Up from your bleeding heart
This time is yours to be
These patterns to be seen
Believe in who you are
No matter where you’ve been
All you need
Is a little empathy
Dare to dream
of a single symphony
All you need is a little empathy
(Doesn’t matter if we fall, it only matters if that’s all)
Dare to scheme a simple symphony
(Never let go of your dreams its the only way to be)
It’s all right
Let them call it fantasy
(Keep on holding to your scene, that’s all you have to believe)
‘Cause all we need
Is a little time to dream
(We’ll never let go of our dreams, its all we have to remain free)
