    Ocean Drive is based on a hazy memory of a looping late night/early morning drive along the Southern California coast. Industrial lights just off the coast reflected on the waves. It felt so warm and comforting, seeing those lights and the ocean crashing from the distance of a roadway. It was like a cozy blanket and the friends with me were quiet and serene as we looked at the forever sea before us. The opening line attempts to capture that: “Late at night, feel the lights, they’re raining down on me…”

    This is for anyone who wants to pull the warm sonic covers over their head and dream of a time where they felt complete, accepted, at one with the world and in awe of the beauty around you. I can only hope you are feeling that right now or experience it for a little while with the song.

  • Electronic Dance Pop “Massive”

    Electronic dance pop original “Massive” was fun to make. Not easy, but fun.

    Played it for someone, and she said, “Oh that sounds so… ’80s.” I certainly don’t try to reference a certain genre or time period in my music, but I am certainly influenced by what I call the great awakening of music in my life. In a time when American pop was stale and tired (to my ears anyway) New Order, Depeche Mode and so many others came along and completely turned my world upside down. It was so different than Bruce and Madonna. Wonderfully different.

    So electronic dance pop can mean so many things to folks. I love the music made today, but I certainly can’t help that these first electronic bands that paved the way still don’t have sway over my creative approach. Anyway, here’s the song. I’d love for you to give it a listen.

    Is it possible to completely escape what you have heard when it comes to song creation? I don’t think so. I have to continue to listen to a lot of different artists and continue to learn from them. I certainly don’t want to always continue repeating something that has already been heard/done before.

    The term electronic dance pop is limited, but for the sake of defining it for those who haven’t heard it before, I will continue to try to use words to describe music. Others can do this much, much better than me.

    Hope and reality are (to me) always seemingly at odds. Remember Where We Are is about navigating the worlds of staying grounded and looking up.

    Emotional Dance Music — Remember Where We Are is a struggle I face often. First things first, it was Gabriel & Dresden who first termed their flavor of EDM as Emotional Dance Music. I am borrowing it from them. It expresses the music I am trying to create. More and more as I find my voice, I am less inclined towards trying to emulate upbeat bangers – that I really enjoy! Instead finding a place to reflect while not resorting to navel gazing. A song, to me, still has to have a great beat.

    I hope you enjoy this song. I am continuing to work on production values and create emotional dance music that connects. Thank you for listening.

    Original Dance Single: Quiet Now

    Original dance single — Quiet Now

    Original dance single Quiet Now is a breakthrough from a production perspective. I prefer to use multiple instruments, which can become problematic when separating into their own spaces. You can easily get what is known as mud. And worst of all, vocals can get lost in the mix. The lyrics were important in this one (below) so I worked hard on making the vocals clear and understandable and keeping all the instruments in their own space. I really hope you enjoy. I think this is one of my best efforts ever.

    I don’t know that there’s much to say about this original dance single. “Quiet Now” pretty much speaks for itself through the lyrics and instrumentation. I wanted to hold to my style and include a dance beat, but at the same time create a reflective mood, one that we might want to stay in a little longer.
